THIRTY

Tonya was exhausted when she returned to her hotel suite. The long day had finally caught up with her, and her legs and back were feeling sore. Filling the bathtub with hot water, she settled in for a long soak. Afterwards, she got ready for bed, but before turning on the TV, she took Annette's photo from her suitcase and sat down at the table.

"Well, sissy," she said, "in spite of my best efforts to not follow in your footsteps, I seem to have done so anyway. In fact, I've outdone you. I'm sleeping with a man who would have been our father's age in exchange for room and board, and a recording contract. So much for your virtuous baby sister who set out to be a virgin bride."

"I know who can get you away from George."

"Well, that was weird." Tonya looked around the room. "It's almost like I heard your voice. Must be because it's what you might have said if you were here. I also know you're looking out for me, for which I'll always be grateful." Her eyes turned misty. "I love you, Annette, and I'll always regret that things were so bad between us when you left."

She stood from her chair and grabbed the remote, but it slipped from her hand and toppled to the floor. Picking it up, she accidently turned on the TV, and a documentary about The Monkees appeared on the screen.

"I remember them," she said. "Mom liked The Monkees. Remember how she used to play their music back when we were kids?" As she watched a clip from an old, grainy looking interview with Micky Dolenz, the band's drummer, her face suddenly lit up.

"Wait a minute...Micky? Of course. Now I get it. Well, Annette, you're right. Mickey's an amazing guy, and I could fall for him. Really easily, but in spite of George encouraging me to get to know him better, I also have a feeling he won't let me go without a fight. Hopefully, I'm wrong."

Tonya felt stiff and sore the following morning, so she scheduled the earliest available appointment for another massage. Afterwards, she did a Facetime session with Shawn, who was excited to hear about her singing with Mickey Lee Janson.

"I really am proud of you. Working with a major recording star like Mickey Lee Janson is quite an accomplishment. Hopefully, once you're rich and famous, you'll think back of me fondly."

"Get out of town. If I get rich and famous, you'll be rich and famous right along with me, because you'll be included on every album I make."
